This February, we are celebrating Black History Month and the incredible technological contributions of African Americans in our distant and recent past. We are also shining a spotlight on some of the rising stars and innovators who are advancing STEM today and shaping our future, like our very own technical recruiter, Salim Powell.
Salim Powell holds a bachelor’s degree in Sports Management and a Master’s in Higher Education from Southeast Missouri State, and his career path is quite unique! A longtime recruiter in the athletic industry (from college to professional sports), Powell transitioned to the gridiron of tech, where he found a niche in identifying talent, not on the field but in the workforce. As a recruiter with e&e, Powell has developed a love for connecting people from diverse backgrounds with opportunities for career advancement in the IT space.

Dr. Joy Boulamwini
Dr. Joy Boulamwini is a computer scientist, digital activist, and best-selling author who brings awareness to the social impact of artificial intelligence and bias in facial recognition algorithms. Boulamwini recently shared valuable insight on the topic and an excerpt from her new book, “Unmasking AI: My Mission to Protect What Is Human in a World of Machines,” found here via MIT Sloan. To quote Dr. Boulamwini, “Power shadows are cast when the biases or systemic exclusion of a society are reflected in the data.”
Dr. Mark Dean
Dr. Mark Dean began working at IBM in 1980 and is a pioneer in the field of computer science. In fact, he is considered one of the most prominent black inventors in his field and holds more than 40 patents in total. In addition to his history-making role as chief engineer during the development of the first IBM PC, Dean’s most famous contributions include “color PC monitors, plug-and-play printers and monitors, and the first gigahertz chip,” according to TechTarget. Dr. Mark Dean is now a distinguished Emeritus Professor at the University of Tennessee and an Inductee of the National Inventors Hall of Fame.
Ime Archibong
Ime Archibong graduated from both Yale and Stanford before accepting a position at IBM as a software engineer. Swiftly moving up the ranks, he eventually joined Meta (then Facebook) as vice president of product partnerships in 2010, per TechTarget, and in 2019, “he became the head of new product experimentation, making him the highest-ranking Black employee at the company.” Archibong “is a listed inventor on more than a dozen technical patents, and serves on Capital One’s corporate board, as well as many nonprofits focused on empowering underserved youth, students, and entrepreneurs,” per The 2023 Black is Tech Conference.
