Generative AI
According to Forbes, “2023 was the year that generative AI burst into the mainstream. 2024 will be the year that the world gets to grips with how truly powerful and useful it can be.” From ChatGTP (the GTP stands for generative pretrained transformer) to DALL-E and Adobe Firefly (tools for AI generated art), these and other generative AI platforms are already having an impact on various industries. While they have the immense potential to do good (examples include improved medical imaging analysis and high-resolution weather forecasts, per McKinsey and Company), AI machine learning is not without its risks. Harvard Business Review recently noted that, “Just because something can be automated doesn’t mean it should be. Generative AI tools aren’t always capable of understanding emotional or business context, or knowing when they’re wrong or damaging. Humans need to be involved to review outputs for accuracy, suss out bias, and ensure models are operating as intended. More broadly, generative AI should be seen as a way to augment human capabilities and empower communities, not replace or displace them.”
Quantum Computing
Per LinkedIn, quantum computing will transition from mere “buzz to tangible benefits” in 2024, moving beyond “fraud detection, risk management, and high-frequency trading” for banks and financial service organizations to a wider range of industries and applications that require a calculation-heavy workload, such as “genome sequencing, cryptography, meteorology, material science, optimization of complex systems, and the search for extraterrestrial life.” According to Forbes contributor Bernard Marr, “Quantum computers are capable of carrying out vast numbers of calculations simultaneously by harnessing weird and wonderful elements of quantum physics, such as quantum entanglement and superposition. Virtual and Augmented Reality
No longer just for fun and games, virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and extended reality (ER) are crossing over into more practical uses. For example, VR (which immerses the user in an enhanced, simulated environment) is currently being used as a training tool for the US Navy, Army, and Coast Guard. And Analytics Insight predicts that, in 2024, AR, VR, and other immersive trends will expand to commercial areas such as tourism, healthcare, health and wellness, e-commerce, education, and remote work, to name a few.
